Why Is My Socket Not Working?
The short answer
A single dead socket is usually a loose termination inside that socket or the next one on the circuit, a tripped breaker, or a switched socket that is off. If several sockets in a row are dead, the fault is at one point in the circuit — most often a loose neutral or live connection that has overheated. Any socket that is warm, discoloured or smells must be isolated immediately.
Symptoms you may be seeing
- One socket has no power while others in the room work
- Several sockets in the same area are all dead
- The socket works intermittently, or only when the plug is wiggled
- The socket or plug feels warm to the touch
- Discolouration, scorching or a plastic smell at the socket
- The breaker for that circuit has tripped
Possible causes, most common first
01Loose terminal connection
The most common cause. A conductor that was not tightened properly heats up under load, oxidises and eventually loses contact — and it is a genuine fire risk before it fails completely.
02Tripped breaker or RCD
Simple to check, and a dead socket is sometimes the only clue that a circuit has tripped.
03Switched or isolated socket
Some sockets are controlled by a wall switch or a separate isolator, particularly behind appliances and in kitchens.
04Failed socket outlet
Worn contacts inside the socket itself, common on outlets used for high-load appliances or where plugs are frequently changed.
05Damaged cable
Cable damaged by drilling, nailing or previous work, often revealing itself as an intermittent fault.
06Water ingress
In outdoor, balcony and utility sockets, moisture causes corrosion and earth leakage that either trips the RCD or corrodes the contacts.
What you can safely check — and what you should not touch
The first list is safe for any homeowner. The second list is genuinely dangerous or damaging, and should only be carried out by a qualified technician.
Safe checks you can do yourself
- Test the appliance in another socket to confirm the socket is at fault, not the appliance
- Check the DB board for a tripped breaker or RCD
- Check for a wall switch or isolator controlling that socket, including behind appliances
- Feel (briefly, with a dry hand) whether the socket plate is warm — if it is, switch that circuit off
- Look for discolouration, scorch marks or a plastic smell around the socket
- Note whether neighbouring sockets are also dead, and in what order along the wall
Do not attempt these
- Do not remove the socket faceplate or work inside it
- Do not use a socket that is warm, discoloured or smells — isolate the circuit at the DB board
- Do not run an extension lead from another room as a permanent solution for a high-load appliance
- Do not push objects into the socket to test it
- Do not reset a breaker repeatedly if it trips when that socket is used
How to work through it

Confirm the socket, not the appliance
Test the same appliance elsewhere and another appliance in that socket. This takes 30 seconds and avoids an unnecessary call-out.

Check the board and any local switch
A tripped breaker or an isolator switched off explains a large share of dead sockets.

Check for heat and discolouration
Warmth or browning at the plate means a loose, overheating termination. Switch the circuit off and get it repaired — this is the one that starts fires.

Map how many sockets are affected
Knowing where the dead run starts and ends tells the electrician exactly which junction to open first.

Have terminations tested and remade
An electrician will check terminations along the circuit, remake them correctly to torque, and test insulation and continuity afterwards.

What it typically costs to put right
Where the cause is a tripped breaker or an isolator, there is nothing to repair. Replacing a socket outlet and remaking terminations is a low-cost, single-visit job. Tracing a damaged cable inside a wall costs more because of access and reinstatement, and repairing heat damage at a junction may mean replacing a section of cable.
