Electrical Burning Smell: What to Do Immediately

The short answer

Treat an electrical burning smell as urgent. Switch off the affected circuit at the distribution board, unplug appliances on it, and do not use it again until an electrician has inspected it. The smell almost always comes from a connection overheating — a loose terminal, an overloaded socket, or a failing appliance — and overheating connections are the most common cause of domestic electrical fires.

  • A hot-plastic, fishy or acrid smell near a socket, switch or light fitting
  • Smell coming from the distribution board
  • A socket plate, plug or switch that is warm or discoloured
  • Buzzing or crackling from a socket, switch or fitting

  • Visible scorch marks or melted plastic

Possible causes, most common first

01Loose terminal overheating

A poor connection creates resistance, resistance creates heat, and heat degrades the surrounding plastic. This is the classic cause and it worsens over time.

02Overloaded socket or extension lead

Multiple high-load appliances through one outlet or a cheap extension lead. Common with heaters, kettles and irons.

03Failing appliance

A motor winding, pump or power supply inside an appliance burning out. The smell follows the appliance, not the socket.

04Damaged or degraded cable insulation

Insulation cooked over years by an overloaded circuit, or damaged mechanically during previous work.

05Water ingress and arcing

Moisture in an outdoor or bathroom fitting causes tracking and arcing, which produces a distinctive acrid smell.

06Failing device in the DB board

A breaker or connection in the board itself overheating — the most serious location for this symptom.

What you can safely check — and what you should not touch

The first list is safe for any homeowner. The second list is genuinely dangerous or damaging, and should only be carried out by a qualified technician.

Safe checks you can do yourself

  • Identify the area the smell is strongest, without touching fittings
  • Switch off the circuit for that area at the distribution board
  • Unplug appliances on that circuit once the power is off
  • Check whether the smell is coming from an appliance rather than the outlet, by noting whether it only appears when that appliance runs
  • Look (do not touch) for discolouration, melting or scorch marks
  • If the smell is at the DB board and you can safely reach the main switch, switch it off and call an electrician
  • If there is smoke, visible sparking or heat you can feel from a distance, leave the area and call the emergency services on 997

Do not attempt these

  • Do not keep using the circuit because the smell 'faded'
  • Do not remove socket faceplates, switch plates or the DB board cover
  • Do not spray water on a suspected electrical fire
  • Do not plug the appliance into a different socket to test it
  • Do not reset a breaker that tripped alongside a burning smell
  • Do not wait for it to happen again before acting

How to work through it

  1. 01

    Isolate the circuit now

    Switch off the affected circuit at the distribution board. This removes the heat source immediately and is the single most important step.

  2. 02

    Separate appliance from installation

    If the smell follows a specific appliance, the appliance is the fault and should be taken out of service. If it stays at the outlet, the wiring is the fault.

  3. 03

    Leave it isolated

    Do not restore the circuit to 'check whether it is fine now'. The underlying defect does not repair itself and the next overheat is worse.

  4. 04

    Call a certified electrician the same day

    This is not a wait-and-see fault. Terminations, socket outlets, cable condition and the board itself need inspecting and testing.

  5. 05

    Have the whole circuit checked, not just the smell point

    Where one termination has overheated, others on the same circuit are often in similar condition and should be inspected too.

What it typically costs to put right

Inspection and testing of the affected circuit is a modest visit cost, and it is not a cost worth avoiding. Replacing a damaged socket or switch and remaking terminations is inexpensive. Replacing a heat-damaged cable section or repairing damage inside the DB board costs more. All of it is far cheaper than the alternative, which is why this is the one fault we ask people never to postpone.
