Hitachi AC Error Codes: What They Mean & What to Do

Hitachi residential splits report faults as plain numbers rather than letter-prefixed codes, and the number itself identifies the fault — 02 is a high-pressure cut, 48 is an outdoor DC fan motor fault. Some split lines also display an alternate E-format set. Hitachi's Set Free, Utopia ES and Summit VRF ranges use a completely separate alarm numbering plus a dual LED indicator system, so a number read on a VRF system must never be looked up in the residential table.
How do Hitachi AC error codes work?
Most Hitachi residential splits show a two-character number: 01–0A are unit-level and communication faults, 11–29 are sensor faults, 31–47 are configuration and protection trips, and 51–55 are inverter faults. Some lines display an alternate E-format set (E3, E4, E5, E6, E9) for equivalent refrigerant, temperature, current and communication faults. Hitachi VRF ranges keep their own alarm numbering and are read from indicator 301 / 302 LED positions instead.

Where the code is displayed — and why it matters
The same fault can be labelled differently depending on which display you read it from, so identify the display before looking the code up.
- Indoor unit display
- Wall-mounted splits show the numeric code on the front panel.
- Wired controller
- Ducted and light-commercial units display the alarm number, often with the unit address.
- VRF indicators 301 / 302
- Set Free and Utopia ranges use paired LED indicators, where the indicator number narrows the fault to system status or a specific thermistor position.

How the families differ
- A number on a wall unit is a residential split code. The same number on a Set Free, Utopia ES or Summit system belongs to a different alarm table entirely.
- Hitachi VRF diagnosis uses two indicators: 301 reports compressor and system status, 302 identifies which refrigerant-circuit thermistor is at fault. There is no single alphanumeric code to look up.
- The alternate E-format codes on some split lines describe the same fault families as the numeric set — record exactly what the display shows.

Before you act on a code
- Codes 11 to 16 are documented as a group of indoor thermistor faults. Which sensor a specific number refers to must be confirmed against your model's service documentation.
- Do not read a residential split code against a Set Free / Utopia VRF alarm table, or the reverse — Hitachi maintains these as separate numbering systems.
- Hitachi VRF alarm coverage is still in technical review; we publish the split table now rather than filling the VRF table from unverified lists.

- One wall unit with its own outdoor unit is residential split; one large outdoor unit feeding many zones is Set Free / Utopia VRF.

Hitachi error codes — common questions
What does Hitachi error 02 mean?
Code 02 is a high-pressure cut (PSH) — the high-pressure protection switch has opened and stopped the system. In Dubai this most often follows poor heat rejection at the outdoor unit: a blocked or dirty condenser coil, restricted airflow around the unit, or a failed condenser fan.
What does Hitachi code 03 mean?
Code 03 indicates an abnormality between the indoor and outdoor unit — the two are no longer communicating correctly. Loss of power to the outdoor unit, damaged interconnecting wiring and control board faults are the causes to check, in that order of accessibility.
Why do two Hitachi units show different codes for the same problem?
Hitachi documents more than one code format. Some split lines show plain numbers while others display an alternate E-format set, and the VRF ranges use their own alarm numbering with LED indicators. Always record which display the code came from.
Can I reset a Hitachi error code myself?
Switching the unit off at the isolator and back on may clear a transient code, but a code that returns is reporting a real fault. Protection trips such as 02, 45 and 47 should not be repeatedly reset — they stop the system to prevent damage.
