Hisense AC Error Codes: What They Mean & What to Do

Hisense runs two entirely separate code architectures. Residential splits report plain two-digit numbers from 01 to 97, and PAC light-commercial units report E-prefixed codes. A number and an E code are never the same fault system, so the first question is which line your unit belongs to. Hisense also has a distinctive repeat-fault state: EE is not a fault of its own but a compressor protection triggered by other codes recurring.
How do Hisense AC error codes work?
On residential splits, Hisense uses two-digit numeric codes: roughly 01–19 for outdoor, inverter and compressor faults, and 33–97 for indoor sensors, communication, fan, pressure and valve faults. PAC light-commercial units instead use E0 to E5 for indoor sensors, communication, compressor overcurrent and outdoor fan failure. EE on a split is a compressor protection state caused by repeated faults within six hours.

Where the code is displayed — and why it matters
The same fault can be labelled differently depending on which display you read it from, so identify the display before looking the code up.

Hisense numeric code ranges
On residential splits the range indicates roughly where the fault sits:
- 01–19
- Outdoor, inverter, compressor and supply faults
- 21–49
- Sensors, communication, drain, fan and pressure faults
- 54–97
- Inverter feedback, controller network, valve and shutdown protections
- E0–E5

How the families differ
- A two-digit number and an E code come from different Hisense systems and must never be cross-read.
- Several numeric codes are documented with two alternative meanings depending on the model, and both are published rather than one being chosen.
- Hisense VRF-specific codes and ducted/cassette variance were not covered by our source material and are not published here.

Before you act on a code
- EE on a split is a protection state, not the root fault: the code that keeps repeating (for example 02, 08 or 45) is what needs diagnosis.
- Codes reporting IPM, phase sequence or supply voltage are electrical faults — leave the unit off and have them inspected.
- Hisense VRF and ducted-specific code tables are still in technical review.

How to identify your system
- Note whether the display shows a plain number or an E code — that decides which table applies.
- Note where you read it: indoor unit, wired controller or a central controller.
- Photograph the indoor unit's model label, as several numeric codes have model-dependent alternatives.

Hisense error codes — common questions
What does Hisense EE mean?
EE is a compressor protection code, triggered when certain faults — 02, 07, 08, 39, 43, 44, 45 or 47 — recur within six hours. Clearing EE without diagnosing the recurring code simply resets the counter while the underlying fault remains.
What does Hisense error 36 mean?
36 is a communication problem between the indoor and outdoor unit. The fault sits in the interconnecting wiring, the terminations, or the boards at either end rather than in the cooling circuit.
Why do some Hisense codes have two meanings?
Because Hisense used the same numbers differently across model lines, and our sources document both. Rather than choose, we publish both documented meanings and flag that the model label resolves it.
Is a Hisense PAC E4 the same as split code 04?
No. The PAC light-commercial E-code set and the residential split numeric set are separate architectures. PAC E4 is compressor overcurrent protection; split code 04 is a current transformer or inverter-circuit signal fault.
