Gree uses a letter-plus-digit code system where the letter identifies the type of event: E codes are system protections, F codes are sensor faults and frequency limits, H codes are compressor and power-module protections, and P, U and L codes are reported by the outdoor inverter drive board. Gree is also the OEM behind several other names sold in the UAE, so the same code layout often appears on rebadged units — but only the Gree table should be read against a Gree brand plate.
How do Gree error codes work?
The letter tells you the fault family: E = system protection (pressure, communication, over-current), F = sensor faults and frequency limiting, H = compressor and power-module protection, C = PCB configuration, and L, P and U = outdoor inverter drive faults. The digit identifies the specific fault. Codes appear on the indoor unit display or handset; drive-board codes are read on the outdoor board. Some codes, such as H1 (defrosting), report a normal operating state rather than a fault.

Where the code is displayed — and why it matters
The same fault can be labelled differently depending on which display you read it from, so identify the display before looking the code up.
- Indoor unit display
- Wall-mounted splits flash the code on the front panel display.
- Wireless remote / handset
- Some models mirror the active code on the handset screen.
- Outdoor inverter drive board
- P / U / L / oE drive codes are read on the outdoor board, not the room display.
Gree code letter families
The letter narrows the fault before you know the exact code:
- E
- System protections — pressure, communication, over-current, water level
- F
- Sensor faults and protective frequency limiting
- H
- Compressor, power-module and system protections (H1 = defrost status)
- C
- PCB configuration (jumper cap)
- L
- Startup, fan-motor and compressor-phase faults
- P
- Drive-board voltage, current and IPM faults
- U
- Compressor phase / rotation and AC detection faults
How the families differ
- Indoor-displayed E, F and H codes describe what the system protected itself against; the P, U and L drive codes describe why the inverter board stopped driving the compressor.
- A frequency-limit code (F6, F8, F9, FA, H0) is not a hard fault — the unit is deliberately reducing output to stay inside a limit, which in Dubai summer often means the condenser cannot reject heat fast enough.
- Gree U4 has nothing to do with Daikin U4. Codes are only ever read against the manufacturer on the brand plate.
Gree indoor-displayed codes (split, multi-split, ducted)
Codes read from the indoor display or handset. Severity follows the source research: protections marked high stop the system to prevent damage, moderate codes usually allow limited running, and status codes such as H1 are not faults at all.

Gree outdoor inverter drive board codes
Reported by the outdoor drive board. These are electrical and inverter-level faults — the outdoor unit's power side must be isolated by a technician before any inspection.

Before you act on a code
- Several drive-board codes (P, U, L series) come from a single technical compilation in our research pass rather than an official Gree service manual — verify against your model's documentation before parts are replaced.
- Do not clear a high-severity protection code by repeatedly switching the unit off and on. E1, E3, E4, E5, H3, H4, H5 and H7 all indicate the system stopped to protect itself.
- Gree-built units are sold under other brand names in the UAE. Read the code against the brand on the plate, not the brand on the invoice.

How to identify your system
- Note the exact code and whether it appeared on the indoor display, the handset, or the outdoor drive board.
- Photograph the indoor unit's model label — the label settles which code family applies.
- Note whether the unit stops completely, or keeps running weakly (a frequency-limit code rather than a protection trip).

Gree error codes — common questions
What does Gree E6 mean?
E6 indicates a communication failure between the indoor and outdoor unit — the two boards are no longer exchanging valid signals, so the system cannot run cooling. The usual causes are a loss of power to the outdoor unit, damaged interconnecting wiring, or a failed control board.
Is a Gree E1 or E3 code serious?
Both are high-severity refrigerant-circuit protections: E1 is high-pressure protection and E3 is low-pressure or low-refrigerant protection. The unit stops to protect the compressor. Neither should be repeatedly reset — the underlying pressure problem needs diagnosis.
Why does my Gree AC show a code only in the afternoon?
Protective frequency-limit and high-pressure codes are load-related. In Dubai's peak summer temperatures a dirty condenser, restricted airflow around the outdoor unit or a marginal refrigerant charge shows up first at the hottest part of the day, then clears as ambient temperature drops.
Is H1 on a Gree AC a fault?
No. H1 indicates the unit is running a defrost cycle, which is a normal operating state rather than a fault. If the unit spends long periods in defrost, or never returns to cooling, that is worth diagnosing.
