How to tell: The noise is a rattle, a vibration or a knock, and it changes if you touch or steady the casing.
- Loose fixings, panels and grilles
- Units here run for most of the year, and constant vibration works clips and screws loose. It is a recurring noise complaint and often resolved during a routine service.
- Mountings and anti-vibration components
- Outdoor units sit on feet or pads that harden and deteriorate in the heat, so the running vibration transfers into the structure instead of being absorbed.
Rotating parts
Common where the sound has worsened over weeks
How to tell: The noise rises and falls with fan speed, or it is a running screech or grind rather than an intermittent rattle.
- Fan or blower wear
- Bearings and fan assemblies in either unit wear with hours run and with the dust they run in. The characteristic pattern is a sound that gets gradually worse rather than appearing overnight.
- Something contacting a rotating part
- Debris, a dislodged piece of insulation or a distorted fan guard rubbing against a fan produces a repetitive noise that changes with speed. It is inside the machine, so it is service work, not a customer check.
Electrical
Less common than rattles, and the highest-priority category when present
How to tell: A buzz or a repeated click, usually as the system tries to start, often at the outdoor unit.
- A start or control condition
- Where a component cannot energise or start cleanly, the audible result is a buzz or repeated clicking. Which component it is cannot be established by ear, and it is not accessible to a customer — the covers stay on.
Air and duct noise
Common in ducted villas and heavily restricted systems
How to tell: The noise comes from the vents rather than from the machine.
- Restriction in the air path
- A clogged filter, closed vents, a blocked return or a crushed duct all force air through a smaller opening, and the whistle or roar is the audible version of the airflow problem that also costs you cooling.
Refrigerant-circuit sounds
Sometimes normal, sometimes a signal
How to tell: A soft hiss or bubbling near the indoor unit, with or without a change in cooling.
- Flow noise, or a possible leak
- Some refrigerant flow noise is normal in certain operating states. It becomes a signal when it comes with fading cooling or with ice forming. Confirming a leak requires proper detection — a sound is a reason to look, not a diagnosis in itself.
Sounds that are normal
Worth knowing before you pay for a visit
How to tell: A single click as it starts or stops, a soft whoosh as air moves, gentle expansion ticking as it warms up.

- Systems click as they switch, tick slightly as plastic and metal expand, and produce a low airflow sound. What is worth attention is a change: a new sound, a louder sound, or a sound that keeps getting worse.

- Check the outdoor unit sits level and is not touching a wall, railing or stored items
- Clear leaves and loose debris from around the outdoor unit, without reaching inside it

Frequently asked questions
Which AC noises mean I should switch it off?
Grinding, heavy metallic knocking, electrical buzzing, and any noise accompanied by a burning smell. Those are the sounds where continuing to run the system can make the damage worse.
Does buzzing mean a failed capacitor?
Buzzing can be associated with a component that is struggling to start, but a sound alone does not identify which part. That has to be confirmed by testing — which is also why we do not quote a part from a phone description.
Why is my AC louder than it was last year?
Loosened fixings, deteriorated mountings, a dust-loaded blower and normal bearing wear all develop gradually, and units here run long enough for that to show within a couple of seasons. What matters is whether the sound is in the benign group or the serious one.
Is a hissing AC leaking gas?
Sometimes, but not necessarily — some refrigerant flow noise is normal. Hissing becomes worth investigating when cooling is also fading or ice is forming, and confirming a leak needs proper detection rather than a listen.
Can a noisy outdoor unit be fixed, or does it need replacing?
That depends entirely on what is making the noise, and it needs inspection to say honestly. Mounting and fixing noises are minor work; noises from rotating parts or the electrical side need diagnosis before anyone can sensibly talk about repair or replacement.
