Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?

The short answer

A breaker that keeps tripping is protecting you from a real fault. The three possibilities are overload (too much current on the circuit), a short circuit (an instant trip), and earth leakage (an RCD trip, usually caused by water or damaged insulation). In Dubai the most common culprits are water heater elements, water ingress in outdoor and bathroom circuits, and AC units drawing excess current. Never repeatedly reset a breaker that trips again.

  • One breaker trips repeatedly, sometimes at the same time of day
  • The main RCD trips and takes out power to several circuits
  • A breaker trips the moment it is reset
  • Power fails when a specific appliance is switched on
  • Trips increase after washing a balcony, watering a garden, or after rain

Possible causes, most common first

01Overload

The circuit is carrying more current than its rating — commonly several high-load appliances on one kitchen circuit. The trip happens after a period of running, not instantly.

02Short circuit

Live and neutral in direct contact, usually from damaged cable, a failed appliance or a damaged fitting. The trip is instant and repeats immediately on reset.

03Earth leakage from water ingress

The most common RCD tripper in Dubai: water in outdoor sockets, garden lighting, balcony fittings or bathroom extract fans.

04Failing water heater element

An element leaking current to earth is a classic whole-property RCD trip, often occurring only when the heater is heating.

05AC and motor loads

A failing compressor or capacitor causes high start current that trips the breaker seconds after the outdoor unit tries to start.

06Accumulated standing leakage

Many modern appliances leak a tiny amount to earth. Enough of them on one RCD can add up to a nuisance trip without any single fault.

07Faulty breaker or RCD

Possible, but far less common than the faults above. It should only be concluded after circuit testing, not assumed.

What you can safely check — and what you should not touch

The first list is safe for any homeowner. The second list is genuinely dangerous or damaging, and should only be carried out by a qualified technician.

Safe checks you can do yourself

  • Note which breaker trips and whether it is an MCB (single circuit) or the RCD (multiple circuits)
  • Unplug everything on the affected circuit, reset the breaker once, then reconnect appliances one at a time
  • Note whether the trip is instant on reset (short circuit) or after some minutes of running (overload or leakage)
  • Check whether trips correlate with the water heater, the AC, or watering and washing outdoor areas
  • Look for visibly damaged plugs, cables, or water inside an outdoor socket or light fitting
  • If the breaker trips again immediately, leave it off and stop testing

Do not attempt these

  • Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker — it is protecting cable and people from a real fault
  • Do not open the DB board or remove its cover
  • Do not replace a breaker with a higher rating to stop it tripping; this removes protection from the cable and is a fire risk
  • Do not tape or wedge a breaker in the on position
  • Do not touch a socket or fitting that has water in it — isolate the circuit first
  • Do not work on any circuit live

How to work through it

  1. 01

    Identify which device trips

    A single MCB points to one circuit. The RCD points to earth leakage anywhere on the circuits it protects. This determines the whole diagnosis.

  2. 02

    Isolate by appliance

    Unplug everything on the circuit, reset once, then reconnect one item at a time, waiting between each. A faulty appliance reveals itself.

  3. 03

    Note the timing pattern

    Instant trips mean a short circuit. Trips after minutes mean overload or leakage. Trips only when the heater or AC runs identify the source directly.

  4. 04

    Look for water

    Outdoor sockets, garden lights, balcony fittings, bathroom fans. Water ingress is the most common cause of RCD trips in Dubai properties.

  5. 05

    Get insulation and leakage testing done

    An electrician measures insulation resistance per circuit and leakage current to find faults that are not tripping at that moment. That is the only reliable way.

When To Call A Professional

Call a qualified technician if any of these apply

  • The breaker trips again immediately after one reset
  • The RCD trips and you cannot isolate it to a single appliance
  • There is any burning smell, scorch mark, or a warm socket or switch plate
  • The trips began after building work, water ingress or rain
  • The water heater or AC circuit is involved
  • Any circuit needs opening up, or the DB board is involved

What it typically costs to put right

Where the cause is a single faulty appliance, identifying it costs a visit and nothing more. Replacing a damaged socket, fitting or flexible cable is inexpensive. Tracing an intermittent earth-leakage fault takes longer and is charged accordingly. Rewiring a damaged circuit or upgrading DB board protection is the larger cost — but it is also what actually removes the hazard.

Is it safe to keep resetting a tripped breaker?

No. A breaker that trips again is detecting a real fault. Repeated resetting can overheat cable and, in a short-circuit condition, is dangerous.

Why does my RCD trip but not the individual breaker?

Because the fault is earth leakage rather than overcurrent. The RCD detects current escaping to earth — usually water ingress or a failing heating element.

Can I just fit a bigger breaker?

No. The breaker is sized to protect the cable. Fitting a larger one leaves the cable unprotected and creates a fire risk.
