- The hotter it is outside, the more heat crosses into the building and the more work the equipment must do to hold a set temperature — so runtime rises even though nothing has changed about the AC. This is why comparing consecutive months in a Dubai spring or summer tells you almost nothing, and comparing the same month last year tells you a great deal.
- Solar gain and glazing
- Unshaded glass, west-facing rooms and large glazed areas admit heat through the hottest part of the day, and the cooling system removes it hour after hour. Shading that glass is a genuine load reduction rather than a trick — and unlike a repair, it addresses the heat before the equipment has to.
- Insulation and sealing
- Gaps around doors and windows, unsealed service penetrations and poorly insulated roof voids let conditioned air out and hot air in continuously. In villas this is often a larger factor than anything happening inside the machine.

- More people at home, a bedroom now used as an office, guests staying, or cooling rooms that are empty all add hours of operation. So does a schedule that keeps the system running when nobody is there.

- A door left open to a stairwell, balcony or garage means the system is cooling far more volume than the room it is in — with no chance of ever satisfying the thermostat.

How to tell: Airflow at the vents is weak, and cooling is slower than it used to be.
- Clogged filter and fouled coil
- Restrict the air across the coil and the system moves less heat per hour of running — so it runs longer for the same comfort, and longer running is what appears on the bill. Dubai's dust loads filters between services rather than between seasons, which is why this is the first thing to check.
- Blocked returns, closed vents and duct problems
- Furniture against a return grille, vents closed to redirect air, and crushed or disconnected duct runs in villa roof voids all reduce delivered cooling while the equipment keeps consuming. In a ducted villa, cooled air escaping into a hot roof void is paid for and never felt.
Heat rejection at the outdoor unit

How to tell: The outdoor unit is dust-coated, boxed in, or in direct sun, and the system struggles most in the afternoon.
- Dust-loaded condenser coil or restricted airflow around the unit
- The outdoor unit's job is to dump heat into the outside air. Coat that surface with dust, or enclose the unit so the same hot air recirculates, and the system has to work harder and longer to achieve the same cooling. On the hottest afternoons this can also push equipment into a protection response.

How to tell: Runtime is long, cooling is weak, and the cheap causes have been eliminated.
- A condition inside the refrigeration circuit
- A charge that is not correct or a restriction in the circuit reduces the cooling delivered for the energy consumed. It needs measurement, not assumption — and if the charge is genuinely low, the leak is the fault to fix.
- Fan, blower or compressor performance
- Equipment that is running but not performing as designed delivers less cooling per hour. Establishing that requires a technician's instruments; there is no consumer-visible test for it.
- Control and sensor conditions
- A thermostat sensing the wrong temperature, or a control keeping the system running when it should stop, adds runtime invisibly. This category is also the reason a 'high bill' complaint sometimes ends with a control adjustment rather than a part.
Not the AC at all — metering, tariff and billing

How to tell: The amount does not match the home's usage in any plausible way, or the bill covers more than electricity.

Two mechanisms matter here, and neither is 'Dubai is hot'. The first is runtime: in a long, severe summer the equipment is asked to hold a set temperature against a large and sustained heat gain, so it runs for a much greater share of the day than the same equipment would elsewhere — and consumption follows hours of operation, not the presence of a fault. The second is dust, which acts on both ends of the system at once: it loads the indoor filter that governs how much air crosses the coil, and it coats the outdoor coil that has to reject the heat into already very hot air. Both make the system work longer for the same result, which is exactly what shows up as a higher bill. Villas add a third factor, because a large envelope with substantial glazing and roof-void ductwork simply admits and loses more heat than an apartment does.
