Error Code Finder

Look a code up against sourced manufacturer records. Codes we cannot source are not listed — a guessed meaning is worse than no meaning.

1. Which manufacturer?
2. What code is displayed?

Format does not matter — U4, U-4, u 4 and U04 all work.

Toshiba splits its diagnostics between controller codes and outdoor-board LED flash patterns. Controller codes use a letter and two digits — E for communication and control, F for sensors, H for compressor and inverter protection. The outdoor board instead signals a two-character code through a coloured LED combination. Toshiba also documents a generational difference: some codes exist only on 4 series and later controllers.

How do Toshiba AC error codes work?

A Toshiba controller code has a letter and two digits: E codes are communication, addressing and control-board faults, F codes are sensor faults, and H codes are compressor and inverter protections. The outdoor board reports separately by flashing LED combinations — green plus orange, or green plus yellow plus orange — with a two-character code such as 1A or 1E. Which set applies depends on where you read the fault.

Product families covered

  • Split and VRF controllers

E / F / H codes shown on the local or network controller.

  • Outdoor board (LED flash pattern)

Coloured LED combinations signalling a two-character code — a separate diagnostic layer.

Where the code is displayed — and why it matters

The same fault can be labelled differently depending on which display you read it from, so identify the display before looking the code up.

Local wall controller
Shows the E / F / H code directly.
Network / central controller
Shows the same code set, usually with the affected indoor unit address.
Outdoor board LEDs
Green, yellow and orange LEDs combine to indicate the fault code — read the colour combination as well as the code.

Toshiba code letters

The letter narrows the fault before you know the exact code:

E
Communication, addressing and control-board faults
F
Sensor and memory faults
H
Compressor and inverter protections
LED combination
Outdoor board fault, signalled by colour pattern rather than a display code

How the families differ

  • Codes can differ between 3 series and earlier controllers and 4 series onward controllers for the same fault, so the controller generation matters as much as the code.
  • A code read on the outdoor board LEDs belongs to the flash-pattern set, not the controller E / F / H set — the two are separate tables.
  • Powering the unit off before the stored fault codes are read erases the diagnostic memory, so record the code before isolating the system.

Toshiba controller codes (E / F / H)

Documented for both controller generations unless the record states otherwise. Severity is not given in our source material for Toshiba, so no severity level is published.

Toshiba controller codes (E / F / H)
Code What it reports Applies to Severity Source
E01 Indicates no communication from the master indoor unit (local or network controller) Split / VRF controller B
E02 Indicates local controller failure — unable to transmit Split / VRF controller B
E03 Indicates master indoor unit receives no data on the A-B bus Split / VRF controller B
E08 Indicates duplicated indoor unit address Split / VRF controller B
E10 Indicates indoor PCB failure Split / VRF controller B
F01 Indicates indoor TCJ sensor error Split / VRF controller B
F31 Indicates outdoor PC EEPROM error Split / VRF controller B
H01 Indicates inverter compressor over-current detected Split / VRF controller B

Toshiba outdoor board LED flash codes

Read from the outdoor board's LED colour combination. The outdoor unit's power side must be isolated by a technician before any inspection.

Toshiba outdoor board LED flash codes

18 Indicates tE or TS sensor open or short circuit Outdoor board (LED flash pattern) B
19 Indicates td sensor open or short circuit Outdoor board (LED flash pattern) B
1A Indicates outdoor fan motor problem Outdoor board (LED flash pattern) B
1b Indicates tE sensor fault Outdoor board (LED flash pattern) B
1C Indicates compressor drive circuit fault Outdoor board (LED flash pattern) B
07 Indicates indoor-to-outdoor communication fault, including the compressor thermostat circuit Outdoor board (LED flash pattern) B
08 Indicates indoor heat exchanger temperature changing in the wrong direction Outdoor board (LED flash pattern) B
1d Indicates compressor locked-rotor current protection Outdoor board (LED flash pattern) B
1E Indicates compressor high discharge temperature Outdoor board (LED flash pattern) B
1F Indicates compressor current remains too high after current release Outdoor board (LED flash pattern) B

Before you act on a code

  • Do not switch the system off before the fault code has been read or photographed — powering down erases Toshiba's stored diagnostic memory.
  • Check the controller generation before acting on a code: our source documents cases where 3 series and earlier and 4 series onward controllers differ for the same fault.
  • The full 75-code Toshiba catalogue is still in technical review; the codes published here are the ones our source documents directly.

How to identify your system

  1. Record the exact code and whether it came from a wall controller, a central controller, or the outdoor board LEDs.
  2. If it came from the outdoor board, note the LED colour combination — it forms part of the diagnosis.
  3. Photograph the indoor unit's model label so the controller generation can be confirmed.

Toshiba error codes — common questions

What does Toshiba E01 mean?

E01 indicates the controller is receiving no communication from the master indoor unit. The fault is in the link between controller and indoor unit — wiring, terminations or the boards at either end — rather than in the cooling circuit itself.

Why does my Toshiba show a code on the outdoor unit but not on the controller?

Toshiba runs two diagnostic layers. The outdoor board signals its own faults through LED colour combinations, and those codes are not the same set as the controller's E, F and H codes. Read them against the outdoor board table.

Will switching my Toshiba AC off clear the error?

It can clear the display, but it also erases the stored fault history that a technician would use to diagnose the problem. Photograph or write down the code before isolating the unit.

Does Toshiba E08 mean my unit is broken?

E08 reports a duplicated indoor unit address — two units on the same network are configured with the same address. It is a configuration fault on the installation rather than a failed component, and it is corrected by re-addressing the units.
