Sharp AC Error Codes: Two Separate Code Systems Explained

Sharp is unusual in maintaining two entirely separate, non-overlapping code systems. Its global range reports a "section-dash-subsection" number such as 1-0, 2-1 or 11-3, where the first number is the fault section and the second identifies the specific fault within it. Regional split lines and the THU commercial series instead use a conventional alphanumeric E/F/H/P set. A dash in the code tells you immediately which table applies.
How do Sharp AC error codes work?
If the code contains a dash — 1-0, 6-1, 11-3 — it belongs to Sharp's official global numeric system, where section 1 and 5 are thermistor faults, 2 is overheating, 6 and 7 are current faults, 11 and 19 are fan faults, and 17 and 18 are communication faults. If the code is a letter and digit such as E1, F3 or H6, it belongs to the regional and THU-series alphanumeric table.

The same fault can be labelled differently depending on which display you read it from, so identify the display before looking the code up.

The presence of a dash decides which table to read:
- 1-x / 5-x
- Thermistor short-circuit and open-circuit errors
- 2-x
- Overheating — compressor, coils, IPM
- 6-x / 7-x / 14-x
- DC and AC current, PAM and PFC faults
- 17-x / 18-x
- Serial communication faults

How the families differ
- The two systems share no meanings: a Sharp 1-0 and a Sharp E1 come from different tables and must never be cross-read.
- The global numeric system goes far beyond cooling faults — it includes louver, panel and self-cleaning filter mechanism errors that have no equivalent in the THU table.
- The THU series is a commercial line with water-circuit codes (E0 water pump, E9 water flow) that do not appear on residential splits.
- Sharp cassette and ducted-specific codes were not isolated in our source material and are not published here.

Before you act on a code
- Check for a dash before looking a Sharp code up — the two systems are not interchangeable.
- EE on a THU controller means the keypad is locked, not that the unit has failed.
- Drive-side P-series protections are inverter faults: leave the unit off rather than resetting repeatedly.
- Sharp cassette and ducted-specific code tables are still in technical review.

Sharp error codes — common questions
What does Sharp error 1-0 mean?
1-0 is a heat exchanger thermistor short-circuit error from Sharp's official global numeric system. Section 1 codes are all thermistor short circuits; section 5 codes are the matching open-circuit faults.
What does Sharp E6 mean?
On the regional and THU-series alphanumeric table, E6 is a transmission (communication) malfunction — the fault sits in the communication wiring or the boards at either end rather than in the cooling circuit.
Is Sharp EE a fault?
No. EE on a THU controller means the buttons are locked. Unlocking the keypad restores control; nothing needs repairing.
Why does my Sharp code have a dash in it?
Because it comes from Sharp's global numeric system, where the first number is the fault section and the second identifies the specific fault within it. A code without a dash comes from the separate regional and THU alphanumeric table.
