Panasonic AC Error Codes: What They Mean & What to Do

Panasonic splits its diagnostics into two families. Hxx codes are the self-diagnosis results you read at the indoor unit or remote — H00 means no fault was found, and the rest identify communication, sensor, fan and capacity problems. Codes ending in F (11F, 90F–99F) are reported by the inverter outdoor board and are almost all compressor, power-module or drive-stage faults.
How do Panasonic AC error codes work?
Panasonic uses Hxx codes for indoor-side self-diagnosis — H00 is 'no issue found', H11 is a loss of communication between indoor and outdoor units, H14/H15/H17 are sensor faults, and H19 is a jammed indoor fan motor. Codes written as a number followed by F (for example 96F or 99F) come from the inverter outdoor board and indicate compressor, IPM or drive-output faults. Read the code from the display or remote's self-diagnosis mode before looking it up.

Where the code is displayed — and why it matters
The same fault can be labelled differently depending on which display you read it from, so identify the display before looking the code up.
- Indoor unit display
- Shows the active Hxx code; H00 confirms the self-diagnosis found nothing.
- Remote controller self-diagnosis
- Panasonic remotes can run a self-check that reports the stored Hxx code.
- Inverter outdoor board
- nnF codes are read at the outdoor board — a different family from the indoor Hxx codes.
Panasonic code families
The format tells you which board reported the fault:
- H00
- Self-diagnosis completed with no fault found
- H1x
- Communication, capacity, sensor and fan-motor faults
- H41
- Wiring and refrigerant pipe pairing inconsistency (multi-split)
- nnF
- Inverter outdoor board faults — compressor, IPM, drive output
How the families differ
- Hxx codes are the indoor unit's view of the system; nnF codes are the inverter board's view of the compressor and drive stage.
- H12 and H41 are commissioning faults rather than wear failures — they usually mean the installation pairing or capacity matching is wrong, which is why they often appear on newly installed or newly modified multi-split systems.
- H16 is deliberately broad: low outdoor current consumption can mean insufficient refrigerant, an open-circuit current transformer, or IPM failure. It narrows a diagnosis rather than completing it.

Panasonic inverter outdoor board codes (nnF)
Reported by the outdoor inverter board. These are electrical and drive-level faults — the outdoor power supply must be isolated by a technician before any inspection.

Before you act on a code
- H41 (wiring and pipe pairing inconsistency) is an installation fault. On a multi-split system it can make one room heat while another cools, and it is corrected at the pipework and wiring, not at the controller.
- The nnF outdoor codes involve live inverter circuits with charged DC bus capacitors — these are not homeowner checks under any circumstances.

How to identify your system
- Note whether the code is Hxx (indoor self-diagnosis) or ends in F (inverter outdoor board).
- Record whether the unit runs at all, or trips out shortly after starting — drive-stage faults typically stop the compressor within minutes.
- Photograph the indoor unit model label, and note if any installation or pipework changes were made recently (relevant to H12 and H41).

Panasonic error codes — common questions
What does Panasonic H11 mean?
H11 indicates there is no communication between the indoor and outdoor unit, or that a control board is defective. In practice this is usually a power problem at the outdoor unit, disturbed interconnecting wiring, or a failed control PCB.
Is H00 an error?
No. H00 means the self-diagnosis ran and reported no abnormality. If the unit is still not cooling with H00 displayed, the problem is not one the self-diagnosis can detect — airflow, refrigerant charge and heat rejection are the usual next checks.
What does H16 mean on a Panasonic AC?
H16 means the outdoor unit is drawing unusually low current. Our source lists three documented possibilities: insufficient refrigerant, an open-circuit current transformer, or IPM failure. Distinguishing between them requires electrical measurement, so H16 narrows the diagnosis rather than completing it.
Why did H41 appear after a renovation?
H41 reports an inconsistency between wiring and refrigerant pipe connections. It is a pairing fault, so it typically appears after installation, fit-out or pipework changes — very common in Dubai apartments where multi-split runs are altered during renovation.
