Carrier AC Error Codes: What They Mean & What to Do

Carrier uses E codes for detected faults, P codes for electrical and inverter protections, and F codes for refrigerant-charge protections. The complication with Carrier is the display format: the same fault can be shown as a number on an LCD or as a blink count on an LED indicator, and our sources disagree about E1 specifically because of that split. We publish the disagreement rather than picking a side.
How do Carrier AC error codes work?
A Carrier E code identifies a detected fault — sensors, communication, fan and protection trips. P codes cover electrical and inverter protections such as IPM over-current and low supply voltage, and F0 covers refrigerant overcharge protection. Several E codes are documented with two meanings depending on whether the unit is a split or a ducted CP series and whether the fault is shown numerically or as an LED blink count.

Where the code is displayed — and why it matters
The same fault can be labelled differently depending on which display you read it from, so identify the display before looking the code up.
- Indoor unit display
- Shows the E, P or F code directly on units with a numeric display.
- LED indicator
- Some model lines blink the fault instead of showing a code — count the blinks rather than looking for characters.
- Wired controller
- Ducted CP installations usually report the code on the wall controller.

How the families differ
- Split and ducted CP series lines are documented with different meanings for some of the same E codes, so the product line matters as much as the code.
- A numeric LCD reading and an LED blink count are two different display conventions on Carrier — identify which one you are reading before looking a code up.
- Carrier's commercial and VRF 38-series codes are a separate system and are not part of this table.

- F0 indicates overcharge protection, which usually follows a recent service visit — refrigerant work is technician-only.

Carrier error codes — common questions
What does Carrier E1 mean?
It depends on the model, and that is the honest answer. Our sources document E1 as a high-pressure cutout on some Carrier lines and as an indoor room-temperature sensor fault on others, split along product line and display format. Because those two faults need completely different responses, we publish the conflict rather than a guess — your model's service documentation settles it.
Is Carrier E6 serious?
E6 is a communication error between the indoor and outdoor unit, so the cooling circuit itself may be fine. It usually points to the control wiring or the interconnecting cable. One power cycle is reasonable; if the code returns, the link needs to be inspected rather than reset repeatedly.
My Carrier shows P1 — is my AC faulty?
P1 is voltage drop or brownout protection, which reports a supply problem rather than a fault inside the AC. Confirm the unit is receiving a stable mains supply at the isolator. In Dubai, an under-voltage relay on the AC circuit can also hold the system off for several minutes after a dip.
What does Carrier F0 mean?
F0 is over-refrigerant load — overcharge protection. It most often follows incorrect charging during a service visit, so it is a workmanship issue rather than a component failure, and it needs a technician with gauges to correct.
