Midea AC Error Codes: What They Mean & What to Do

Midea is the clearest example in our research of one code meaning different things across product generations — and Midea documents that fragmentation itself. On the R series, E1 is indoor–outdoor communication protection and E2 is a zero-crossing error. On the older E/M/H/G series the numbering shifts by one position, so E1 is the communication fault and E2 is the zero-crossing failure. The series on your model label therefore matters as much as the code on the display.
How do Midea AC error codes work?
Midea E codes are indoor-side and communication faults and P codes are outdoor protections, but the E-code numbering differs by series: R series, the pre-2019 E/M/H/G series, cassette and floor units, MDV commercial VRF and the hydronic range each maintain their own E0–E9 mapping. The outdoor P series (P0 to P11) is consistent across series and covers IPM, voltage, compressor temperature and current protections.

Where the code is displayed — and why it matters
The same fault can be labelled differently depending on which display you read it from, so identify the display before looking the code up.
- Indoor unit display
- Residential splits show the E code on the front panel display.
- Wired controller
- Cassette, ceiling and floor units usually report on the wall controller, often with the unit letter (A, B, C).
- Outdoor unit board
- P-series protections are reported by the outdoor unit.
Midea code prefixes
The prefix narrows the fault; the series decides the exact meaning:
- E0–E9
- Indoor-side, memory, sensor and communication faults — numbering varies by series
- P0–P11
- Outdoor protections: IPM, voltage, compressor temperature and current
- Eb / Ed / EF / EP / EU
- Hydronic / water-circuit sensor faults
How the families differ
- R series and the older E/M/H/G series differ by one position: the communication fault is E1 on one and E2 on the other, which is exactly why the series must be confirmed first.
- Cassette, ceiling and floor E codes identify which indoor unit (A, B or C) reported the sensor fault, and our source documents that some models within the same family use those codes for communication faults instead.
- The hydronic and water-cooled code set belongs with central and commercial systems, not with residential split guides.

Before you act on a code
- Confirm your Midea series before acting on an E code — Midea's own documentation shows the same code numbers carrying different meanings across series.
- P0 and P1 report inverter-module and supply-voltage protections: leave the unit off and have the electrical side checked rather than resetting repeatedly.
- V6 and V8 VRF-specific codes and the full MDV outdoor P-series table are still in technical review.

- Note the code exactly as displayed, and where it appeared.
- Photograph the indoor unit's model label — the series is the single most important detail for Midea.
- For cassette and multi-unit installations, note which indoor unit is reporting.

Midea error codes — common questions
Does Midea E1 always mean a communication fault?
No — and this is Midea's defining quirk. On the R series E1 is indoor–outdoor communication protection, and on the older E/M/H/G series E1 is also the communication fault, but on cassette and floor units E1 is a coil outlet sensor fault, and on MDV commercial VRF it is phase-sequence protection. The series decides the answer.
What does Midea P1 mean?
P1 is voltage protection reported by the outdoor unit. It describes the electrical supply reaching the unit rather than a failed AC component, so the supply should be verified before parts are considered.
Why does my Midea cassette show a letter with the code?
On cassette, ceiling and floor units the code identifies which indoor unit reported the fault — A, B or C. That tells a technician which unit's coil outlet sensor or connector to inspect first.
Are Midea hydronic codes the same as split codes?
No. The water-cooled and heat-pump range uses water-circuit sensor codes such as EF, EP and Eb that have no equivalent in the split tables. They should be read against the hydronic table only.
