Toshiba AC Error Codes: What They Mean & What to Do

Toshiba splits its diagnostics between controller codes and outdoor-board LED flash patterns. Controller codes use a letter and two digits — E for communication and control, F for sensors, H for compressor and inverter protection. The outdoor board instead signals a two-character code through a coloured LED combination. Toshiba also documents a generational difference: some codes exist only on 4 series and later controllers.
How do Toshiba AC error codes work?
A Toshiba controller code has a letter and two digits: E codes are communication, addressing and control-board faults, F codes are sensor faults, and H codes are compressor and inverter protections. The outdoor board reports separately by flashing LED combinations — green plus orange, or green plus yellow plus orange — with a two-character code such as 1A or 1E. Which set applies depends on where you read the fault.

Where the code is displayed — and why it matters
The same fault can be labelled differently depending on which display you read it from, so identify the display before looking the code up.
- Local wall controller
- Shows the E / F / H code directly.
- Network / central controller
- Shows the same code set, usually with the affected indoor unit address.
- Outdoor board LEDs
- Green, yellow and orange LEDs combine to indicate the fault code — read the colour combination as well as the code.

The letter narrows the fault before you know the exact code:

How the families differ
- Codes can differ between 3 series and earlier controllers and 4 series onward controllers for the same fault, so the controller generation matters as much as the code.
- A code read on the outdoor board LEDs belongs to the flash-pattern set, not the controller E / F / H set — the two are separate tables.
- Powering the unit off before the stored fault codes are read erases the diagnostic memory, so record the code before isolating the system.

Toshiba error codes — common questions
What does Toshiba E01 mean?
E01 indicates the controller is receiving no communication from the master indoor unit. The fault is in the link between controller and indoor unit — wiring, terminations or the boards at either end — rather than in the cooling circuit itself.
Why does my Toshiba show a code on the outdoor unit but not on the controller?
Toshiba runs two diagnostic layers. The outdoor board signals its own faults through LED colour combinations, and those codes are not the same set as the controller's E, F and H codes. Read them against the outdoor board table.
Will switching my Toshiba AC off clear the error?
It can clear the display, but it also erases the stored fault history that a technician would use to diagnose the problem. Photograph or write down the code before isolating the unit.
Does Toshiba E08 mean my unit is broken?
E08 reports a duplicated indoor unit address — two units on the same network are configured with the same address. It is a configuration fault on the installation rather than a failed component, and it is corrected by re-addressing the units.
