What you can safely check

When to switch it off

Tripped breaker in the distribution board
Your AC normally has its own labelled breaker. If it has tripped, something asked it to — so reset it once and pay attention to what happens next. If it holds, note the date; if it trips again, the fault is electrical and the unit stays off.
Local isolator switched off
Most units have an isolator switch near the indoor or outdoor unit. It gets switched off during cleaning, painting, pest control or fit-out work and simply never switched back on. It is a recurring 'dead AC' call-out, and it costs nothing to check.
No supply to that circuit
In apartments, a building-side supply issue or works on your riser can kill the AC circuit while the rest of the flat looks normal. If other circuits also behave oddly, it is not your AC.

Remote or wall controller not working
Flat batteries, a controller that lost its settings, or a unit sitting in a mode it will never cool in. The unit is healthy and simply never receives a command.
Set point above room temperature
If the target temperature is higher than the room, a correctly working system does nothing — exactly as designed, and easily mistaken for a fault.
Restart delay after a power cut
Many systems hold off for several minutes to protect the compressor, and some need a full power cycle after an interruption. Waiting is part of the check.
Thermostat or interlock wiring fault
The controller can look perfectly alive while the signal never reaches the equipment — a broken interconnect wire or a failed control board. This needs testing, not guessing.

Drain float switch lockout
If the drain tray fills, a float switch deliberately shuts the system down to stop water reaching your ceiling. The AC looks broken; the actual fault is drainage. Look for damp near the unit before assuming an electrical failure.
Protection lockout after repeated faults
Some systems latch themselves off after repeated protection events and stay off until reset by a technician who has read the fault history. Repeated power cycling clears the evidence rather than the fault.

Indoor control board failure
Boards fail, often after a power surge, and a failed board can be completely silent. Diagnosis means measuring supply and output voltages — not something to attempt at home.
Outdoor contactor or capacitor failure
The unit may appear dead while the fault is a component that never energises the outdoor unit. These are usually inexpensive parts, but they sit behind a cover that stores a dangerous charge even after isolation.

  • Set the unit to Cool mode with the target clearly below the current room temperature
  • Check the labelled AC breaker in your distribution board — reset it once only if it has tripped
  • Find and check the isolator switch near the indoor or outdoor unit, which is often the whole problem
  • Wait a full five minutes after switching on before deciding nothing is happening
  • Look and feel around the indoor unit for damp, which points to a drain safety cut-out rather than an electrical fault
  • Check whether a controller displays any code, and write it down exactly as shown

Needs a technician

  • Power is confirmed at the breaker and isolator and the unit still does nothing
  • The breaker trips again after a single reset
  • The controller shows a code, or the system is a VRF/VRV
  • There is damp around the unit, or the unit locked itself out
  • There is any burning smell, scorch mark or visible damage to wiring
  • The unit is a concealed ceiling or ducted unit with no accessible controls

Why is my AC completely dead with no lights?

Most often no power is reaching it: a tripped breaker or an isolator switch that was turned off during other works. Both are safe to check, and one of them resolves a large share of these calls.

How long should I wait before deciding my AC won't start?

At least five minutes. Many systems hold the compressor off deliberately after being switched on or after a power interruption.

My AC stopped right after a water leak — are they connected?

Very likely. A drain safety switch shuts the system down when the tray fills, precisely so water doesn't reach your ceiling. The fix is a drainage repair, not an electrical one.

Can I reset my AC myself?
